Daniel Berson, MD, FACS

About me:

I am a native New Yorker, and graduated from New York University and New York Medical College. After graduation from medical school I had five years of residency training in Surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, where I had the privilege of working with Dr. Leon Ginzburg, a surgeon, who, along with Dr. Burrill Crohn, a gastroenterologist, and Dr. Gordon Oppenheimer, a pathologist, described the inflammatory bowel disease now commonly known as Crohn's disease.

I am board certified by the American Board of Surgery and was elected as a Senior Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. I was previously on the faculty of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and currently am Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at New York Medical College.

I moved to Rockland County in 1974 and have practiced here exclusively since then. Currently I am Senior Attending Surgeon at Nyack Hospital, where I have served multiple voluntary positions, and was elected by my colleagues as Chairman of the Medical Executive Committee, and Director of the Department of Surgery. I am also on the courtesy staff at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. Among others, I have been honored to serve on the boards of the Rockland County Unit of the American Cancer Society, the Rockland County Medical Society, and United Hospice of Rockland.

As a General Surgeon, my practice is divided into three categories:
  • Abdominal surgery, including gall bladder, stomach, small bowel, colon, and hernia surgery. Most intra-abdominal procedures are now performed laparoscopically.

  • Breast surgery, including the medical and surgical treatment of all benign and malignant conditions.

  • Office surgery, including minor skin procedures, and the removal of "lumps and bumps." I also have a special interest in the office treatment of hemorrhoids and other ano-rectal conditions, avoiding hospital treatment in virtually all cases.

About hemorrhoids:

After many years of treating hemorrhoids, I have found that the best treatment, with the highest degree of patient satisfaction, is in-office suction ligation. In this treatment the patient lies on the left side and a short tube is introduced into the anus. Suction is then applied to the hemorrhoid and a rubber band is placed around it, stopping the blood flow through the hemorrhoid. No tissue is cut. This takes about a minute, causes minimal discomfort for a day, and does not interfere with daily life. The procedure is repeated twice at weekly intervals. With a patient satisfaction rate well over 95%, avoidance of hospitalization and anesthesia, and a high degree of safety, it is clear that this is the best approach.

About insurance and the uninsured:

I recognize that most people do not have a choice as to what insurance is available to them. For that reason I participate in all insurance plans.

For those individuals who cannot get insurance I use the Medicare Part B fee schedule. For example, in 2009 in this area, an intermediate initial office visit (99203) is $106.87 and an in-office hemorrhoid ligation (46221) is $257.73.
